A recent study suggests that octopuses could face vision loss and survival challenges due to rising ocean temperatures. Australian researchers found that heat stress could lead to impaired eyesight. It also saw increased mortality rates among pregnant octopus mothers and their unborn offspring due to the heat. Octopuses exposed to 25 °C were found to produce significantly fewer proteins responsible for vision than those at other temperatures. It also resulted in higher rates of premature deaths among pregnant octopus mothers. The research highlights the vulnerability of octopuses to the increasing impacts of the climate crisis. The lead author, Dr. Hua, noted that “global warming could have a simultaneous impact on multiple generations.”
